Overview
In Auto Technology, you will learn how vehicles operate and how technicians inspect, maintain, diagnose and repair them. Students learn to approach each vehicle problem as a process: gather information, inspect the vehicle, test the system, identify the cause, complete the repair and confirm that the vehicle operates correctly.
Auto Technology I & II – 1 year
Auto Technology is a combination of how mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic parts work.
The first semester consists of classroom and laboratory experience of all the above elements, designed to teach you how to test and repair the automobile. The second-semester is primarily practical experience in a shop atmosphere of diagnosis, computerized testing and mechanical repair of the automobile. Some technical classroom work is required.
| SKILLS YOU WILL BUILD –Perform basic vehicle safety and maintenance inspections. -Change oil and filters and check fluids, belts, hoses and tires. -Service wheels, tires, brakes, steering and suspension systems. -Test batteries, starting systems, charging systems and electrical circuits. -Study engine operation, fuel delivery, ignition, cooling and emission-control systems. -Use scan tools, digital multimeters and other diagnostic equipment. -Read wiring diagrams, technical manuals and manufacturer service information. -Identify symptoms, test possible causes and verify that repairs corrected the problem. -Select and safely use hand tools, power tools, lifts and shop equipment. -Document inspection results, recommended services and completed repairs. -Follow safety procedures for vehicles, chemicals, tools and equipment. –Practice the accuracy, organization and responsibility expected in a professional automotive shop. | STRENGTHS THAT HELP YOU SUCCEED Mechanical reasoning; basic measurement; able to use basic hand tools, reading diagrams and service information; curiosity about how systems work; patience with troubleshooting. WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE Problem solving — A vehicle symptom becomes a puzzle: identify the problem, test likely causes, and verify the repair. Attention to detail — Students follow specifications, service procedures and inspection steps. Communication — Students explain problems and repairs and learn the value of clear documentation. Responsibility — Tools, vehicles and shop safety require preparation, care, and accountability |
